Gazing up at the facade of this house on the Herengracht, or Gentleman’s Canal, one can see a painted wine cask bearing the inscription “t Hochemer Voedervat”. Translated from old Dutch it means the large wine cask. Given the inscription, it will come as no surprise that the construction of the home was commissioned by a Dutch wine merchant. The merchant Jan Willemson gave the order to build this home in 1721. To this day, the most elegant feature of the facade of the house is long elegant neck gable which also dates from the original construction in 1721.
